Assuming you've come across Maddox's kick ass website, you have probably also heard of some crusading woman attempting to sanitize free speech and opinion because of a rather unfortunate incident involving a child who couldn't, for one reason or another, call a hotline for distressed children and God forbid talk to his uptight mommy. Instead Beth Robbins decides to challenge essentially free speech by trying to shut down a website.

"I discovered his website when I found my oldest son, age 14 looking through a page on his site that promoted suicide (http://maddox.xmission.com/suicide.html). I was shocked to find out that my son had been going to this site on a constant basis. Ever since my son started going to Maddox's website, I noticed an increase in his hatred towards certain groups of people and his negative attitude towards life. I no longer allow my children to connect to the internet without my supervision, because I do not want them to view such trash on the web, that promotes hate, suicide, violence, and bad-attitude. "

YES - the internet is full of nasty stuff. YES - it is something that comes with a certain amount of responsibility. Not eveything you read or see on the WWW is in fact true. YES - the internet is the information highway, and YES - your computer comes with an OFF button.

Maybe she'll want to take on next the public libraries and all other repositories of information that cater to suicide and other nasty aspects of reality. Suffice to say that the internet can be a scary, nasty place and it is otherwise ASSUMED that despite information the net provides how you are affected are by this is determined by the amount of education, common sense and other factors that determine of much of an adult you are.

If her children are that susceptible to resorting to the internet and having it affect their behaviour, she may be in for a shock - parents play a bigger role in children's lives before they discover the internet.

One wonders if this lady realizes there is an OFF button for her computer. Perhaps if she were to spend more time with her children up close and personal and attempt to address the ROOT cause of her children's angst, she'd have greater success. Most electronic appliances do come with an OFF button, in case you either grow tired of it or do not want to listen to it anymore. Some of the more common examples include RADIOS, TELEVISIONS, COMPUTERS, VACUUM CLEANERS, AIR CONDITIONERS, etc. In case a child is apt to turn it back on (which they will do) instead of trying to shuck responsibility as a parent and instead try to sanitize the world, it is ultimately the RESPONSIBILITY OF THE PARENTS to teach children what is good and what is bad in this big, bad, ugly world.

Stop MAM from attempting to shift responsiblity as a parent and instead try to sanitize free speech. Every signature this petition receives identifies yet another person who realizes that the OFF button should play a larger role and that life should not be taking this seriously.
