As of March 2012, Derby Women’s Centre will no longer receive funding from Derby City Council and there is a real risk that this will force us to close down early next year. The decision was made on the grounds that we lack specialism and that our work is already being delivered elsewhere in the city.
While we appreciate that other organisations may be doing similar work, we do not feel that there is enough of an overlap to justify this decision. We have been operating since 1978 and are now a leading provider of generic support services for women in Derby city and county. Because we are not a specialist organisation, we welcome any women who would benefit from our work. Through our holistic approach, we are able to tackle multiple needs which means that our service users are not forced to travel backwards and forwards to access support from different providers. This is significant for many of our service users, who do not have the income to do this regularly.
We are therefore appealing the decision and are asking for the help of the wider community to demonstrate the need for our work. Please sign this petition if you agree that our closure would leave a significant void in the lives of vulnerable local women.
