Protect the General Order 06-2!
Stop racial profiling in New Haven!
In December 2006, Chief of Police Francisco Ortiz, Jr. issued General Order 06-2 declaring that "[r]esidents should know that they are encouraged to seek and obtain police assistance and protection regardless of their immigration status."
General Order 06-2 states that police are not to stop and question individuals they SUSPECT have entered the country illegally or overstayed a visa. Therefore, if enforced, it would protect the entire community against racially motivated harassment: A CIVIL RIGHTS VIOLATION.
Sgt. Louis G. Cavaliere, the police union president, has stated publicly (New Haven Register 11/10/07) that some police in his union are unwilling to uphold the General Order. Sgt. Cavaliere's statement threatens to shatter efforts to build trust between the New Haven Police, Immigrants, and People of Color.
Sgt. Cavaliere claims that the general order would compel local police to violate federal immigration law. THIS IS FALSE. The general order only requires police to do their job of keeping the city safe and not collaborate with gestapo-style raids and deportations.
We call on the the New Haven police to re-affirm their commitment to the General Order.
We, the undersigned, call upon the people of New Haven to stand up and support the right of every resident to live in New Haven without fear.

En diciembre del 2006, Francisco Ortiz, el Jefe de Policнa, emitiу la Orden General 06-2 declarando que residented deben saber que tienen el derecho a buscar y obtener asistencia y protecciуn policial y sin importar su estatus migratorio.
La Orden General 06-2 dice que policнas no deben interrogar individuales solo porque SOSPECHAN que han entrado al paнs de manera ilegal o tienen una visa expirada. Si esta orden fuera cumplida, protegerнa a todos los miembros de la comunidad contra discriminaciуn racial.
Sargento Louis G. Cavaliere, el presidente del sindicato de policнas, ha declarado pъblicamente (New Haven Register 11/10/07) que algunos miembros de su sindicato se han negado a ratificar la Orden General. Esta declaraciуn socava los esfuerzos para cultivar confianza entre la Policнa de Nwe Haven, inmigrantes, y gente de color.
Cavaliere afirma que la Orden General obligarнa a la policнa a violar leyes inmigratorias federales. ESTO ES FALSO. La Orden General solo requiere que la policнa cumplan con su deber de proteger la ciudad y no colaborar con las redadas y deportaciones aterrorizantes.
Demandamos que la policнa de New Haven erafirme su adherencia a la Orden General.
