Protest the BCS

Now that the NCAA Division I-A football season has once again ended with three undefeated teams atop the rankings, some sort of action must be taken. The current Bowl Championship Series system is appallingly inadequate on several levels, and it is our opinion that it needs to be thoroughly revamped or completely overhauled. Division I-A football, as we all know, is the only major sport in college athletics whose champion is not decided by a playoff. Even worse, it is the only sport in which there is frequently a split championship partially awarded to two different teams. The undersigned individuals find this situation unacceptable and have decided to take action.

It is patently obvious to anyone familiar with college football that the existing system has evolved in an attempt to maximize profit while preserving the archaic bowl system. There could be virtually interminable debate whether a playoff system is good for the game and whether its institution would diminish the tradition of college football in America. What is obvious, however, is that a majority of fans would like to see a playoff system (or some other system with an undisputed national champion) in place.

We, the undersigned, believing that we are acting in the best interests of college football, hereby pledge not to watch, attend, or in any way support a BCS bowl game until this unacceptable situation has been rectified. It should be noted that this silent protest is a sacrifice on our behalf, as watching and/or attending college football games is one of our favorite pastimes. That said, we are willing to forego this pastime in a humble attempt to better the game of college football.
