In Ontario, there are not enough licensed childcare spots available. As a result, parents are forced to find alternatives, such as unlicensed home child cares. As the tragedy of a two-year-old's death in an unlicensed home care this past week has shown, this needs to change.
At this time, the Ministry of Education only investigates home child care if there are too many children at the care site, according to the Day Nursery Act. There are no other requirements to run a home child care in Ontario. There are no safety or health requirements that home child cares need to follow.
The Ontario government needs to step up and introduce and enforce the licensing of home child cares.
