Long-term hospitalization for children often places them in a foreign environment in which they have almost no control over their surroundings and personal conduct. The availability of a safe and friendly setting in which they may interact on a level more familiar and comfortable is especially important in circumstances that have ultimately placed restrictions on their freedom.
The Barnard-Columbia Chapter of Project Sunshine aims to foster courage and comfort in hospitalized children in New York City in the context of fun and play by bringing to them various educational, social, and recreational programs and activities. Such programs and activities shall not only provide general fun and play, but also focus on elements of diversity especially prevalent in the greater New York City area. Barnard Columbia Project Sunshine hopes to ultimately bring to children in New York City hospitals a chance to experience more out of the city’s diverse culture and resources than what they have confined in their hospital rooms.
We, the undersigned, call on the Barnard Student Government Association to recognize Barnard Columbia Project Sunshine as a student organization on campus, so that it may fulfill its mission and execute its activities to its fullest potential as a student community service group with those privileges granted by the SGA.
