B.C. Ferries recently announced yet another planned hike in ferry fares, from 20% to 100% rise in the next four years, and are demanding ever more public subsidy.
Many communities on the B.C coast on dependent on the ferry service to survive; the ferry is both public transit and an extension of the public highway. The privately run corporation is losing customers, has overpaid upper management, and its finances are not open to public scrutiny despite $150 million dollars per year of taxpayer supported subsidies.
The B.C. ferry system needs to be returned to the Ministry of Transport, and run as an essential public service for the citizens of British Columbia.
