WHEREAS South Coast British Columbia Transportation Authority (Translink) has negotiated a transportation agreement with University of British Columbia and Simon Fraser University resulting in a 3 zone monthly transit pass (U-Pass) at a cost of only $22.00 per month ($136 regular price) or $176.00 during a 2 semester academic year;
WHEREAS students in the K-12 system are ellegible for a 1 zone monthly pass at the price of $42.00 per month, or $420.00 during a 10 month school year;
WHEREAS introduction of the U-Pass to UBC and SFU in 2003 has resulted in increased ridership by 53\% and 39\% respectively, providing students with affordable access to public transit and reducing vehicle trips to campuses;
WHEREAS fares in Translink's services jurisdiction are the highest in Canada;
BE IT RESOLVED that Translink Board of Directors consider introducing S-Pass, an affordable transit pass for secondary students in Metro Vancouver.
