Burghead is a small town on the coast of the Moray Firth. Moray Council on Feb 13 2013 decided to close Burghead Library and six others in rural Moray. We petition Moray Council to urgently re-consider the Council’s decision close Burghead library. We appreciate that budgetary savings need to be made. However, we feel that some decisions are not cost-effective and damage the community.
The library in Burghead is currently open 11 hours a week. It is a vital community resource particularly for the elderly, the less well off, the disabled, and school children. The library lends out books, DVDs and music. It is also an access point to Moray Council, issuing bus passes, and acting as an access point for housing. It is an important venue for many community groups. In addition there is provision of free internet access and computer tuition which is only provided by the library. Access to the internet is rightly seen as very important to rural areas, allowing people to improve job prospects and access opportunities of all kinds. For example, Job Centres now require claimants to sign on at their nearest local library, uploading their CVs and checking for jobs. If Burghead and Hopeman libraries close, the nearest library is in Elgin, an expensive bus journey. Internet access is now rightly seen as so important that the British Government Plan for Digital participation states a need to get everyone online by 2014.
We are proud that the library service in Moray was voted the best in Scotland in 2012. We would like to see this vital service continue and lead Scotland in quality and provision of knowledge to all.
