Save Caroline's Social Worker Position

The needs of Caroline's student population are too great to be served by a half-time social worker. Our children's needs cannot be adequately met by the remaining resources at Caroline, as proposed by the district. This is especially true when considering that the remaining full-time social worker is solely attached to the district's Elementary Transition Program, which includes 8-12 high-needs, emotionally disabled students from across the district. It is outside the scope of that social worker's position to address the needs of the remaining 300+ students in our school.
The limited resources that remain may be able to effectively address daily crises, but will not allow for the time necessary to build relationships or effectively develop and execute plans that could prevent these crises. This cut will prove to be extremely short-sighted since the social worker provides preventative services to many students who will, without his or her support, be destined for much more serious needs in the future. Help our children now. Do not set our children up for failure by denying them the support they need in their formative years.
To quote Frederick Douglass, "It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men." In line with the district's goal of "all students achieving their dreams," we urge the Board to seek alternative measures to close the budget gap.
