The Town Well, a geothermal well, is currently being used to supply the Warner Creek Correctional Facility with geothermal water; the proposal is to double that output to generate electricity.
It is already documented that current use is negatively impacting the geyser, Old Perpetual, and the nearby springs; the Aquifer Impact Study prepared as part of the Environment Assessment for the geothermal power generation project documents a negative water table impact of 3 feet to 200+ feet at Hunters Hot Springs drying them completely.
The EA states the first line of mitigation measure is to provide water from the Town Well; the second to shut down the project. This is unacceptable, as the springs themselves have scientific and wildlife value in their own right and would be destroyed if just water is supplied to keep area ponds full. Furthermore, shutting down a multi-million dollar project after it has been constructed is unlikely.
Hunters Hot Springs have been used by humans and wildlife for centuries. The springs are still used by area residents and visitors from around the world. The geyser is internationally known and used as an economic tool for tourism. The spring should be left alone and protected from development such as this proposed by the Town of Lakeview.
