SAVE OUR HARBOR

To the citizens of Northport Village:
Our most important asset, our harbor, is in danger. During the past three years the beaches of Northport have been named among the most polluted beaches in New York State, and several beaches have been closed either partially or wholly for the entire summer season. Northport Harbor is currently the epicenter of the Red Tide bloom for the entire Eastern seaboard. Scientists at Stony Brook University have pointed to the Northport Village Sewage Treatment Plant as a potential cause for this, and while the elected officials in the village have applied for partial funding for an upgrade to the plant, they have done nothing to finalize this process. The upgrade is a shovel ready project which could provide jobs to the Northport area; and still the village officials have done nothing. Under federal guidelines this upgrade is required to be operational by 2014 (to meet the 2014 Federal standards.) Other municipalities, including The Town of Huntington, have already upgraded their plant to meet these standards.
We want action now. Northport officials should be obtaining full funding and initiating the projects to upgrade the sewage treatment plant, fix sewer pipes and install storm filters. We ask you now to sign this petition and support our effort to present your voices to the village officials so that a blind eye is not turned on this most critical of issues. We need your support and the support of all the citizens and businesses of Northport Village. If you are a Northport Village taxpayer, please sign this petition and forward our email to a friend. Thank you so much.
