On August 5, 2005, the NCAA announced their decision on the matter of the usage of "hostile and abusive" American-Indian nicknames, prohibiting teams with these nickames from participating in postseason play as of February 1, 2006. Also, any American-Indian logos will be disallowed in post season play starting in 2008. This means that at least 18 different schools will be forced to change their nickname if they have any desire to play in any bowl game.
Yes, it is true that many American Indian tribes have declared that they have been offended by teams using their namesake. Teams that have these aforementioned nicknames should not be used out of respect for their respective tribes. However, one tribe happens to support and endorse the use of their name by a college football program: the Seminole tribe of Florida.
This means that because the Seminole tribe of Florida endorses the nickame of Seminoles on the Florida State athletic teams, the name Seminoles should not be a nickname that is considered to be "hostile and abusive," simply because of the support of their name Seminoles
By signing this petition, you agree that teams whose nickames are considered offensive by their respective tribes should not be used in post-season play. Also by signing this, you agree that teams whose nicknames have been supported by their respective namesakes, such as the Seminole tribe of Florida, should have continued use of their name and of their logos.
