Springhill Lake Shuttle

Dear Mr. President,


We are students living in Springhill Lake apartments (SHL) heard that the UM Shuttle 101 that serves the apartments was scheduled to be discontinued starting from this Fall. The reason for this, "This change was made at the request of the apartment complex management which contributed significant funds for this route." as quoted from the department of transportation website. Many of our fellow students living in SHL were shocked and disappointed about this decision made by the Department of Transportation.

We understand the fact that the apartment cut off the funds is surely to affect the normal running of the shuttle. However, we don't think that the shuttle is supposed to be discontinued just because the apartment cut off their funding. The fact is many UM students are still living in there. We don't think the operation of the shuttle is or should be solely supported by the SHL Apartments. Anyway, we are more closely affiliated with our University, NOT the apartments. Somehow we feel being abandoned by the University community by the discontinuation of the shuttle service.

This petition is to ask for the continuation of the SHL shuttle service. We think that you, Mr. President, may understand and help us and won't let us down.
Some of us thought of some solutions. For example, if the shuttle can keep a minimum presence. Instead of providing 28 runs a day, is it possible to keep the shuttle but just run much less frequent, like 8 times a day? The operation cost for the shuttle in this case would be much less. If this is not possible, we also discussed if there is any possibility the nearby Greenbelt shuttle may provide service for SHL by circulating around SHL, maybe 8 runs a day.
