Stop One-Way IDR Plan

In September 2006 Reading Borough Council is going to approve its One-Way IDR project. The objectives of the council are to improve local traffic flow, discourage through traffic, encourage more cycling, walking, and use of public transport.
We, residents of Reading, Earley, Wokingham, Woodley, Winnersh, Sonning, Shinfield and others demand that Reading Borough Council stop this program immediately and study other ways of achieving their objectives.
Below are the reasons for our demand:
- The plan is designed to deliver additional traffic jams / delays and additional pollution outside of the IDR ring (discouraging through traffic). This will have a damaging impact on the residents of Reading and of the adjacent towns.
- Planned improvements to local traffic apply only to a tiny part of Reading inside the IDR ring.
- The plan fails to provide any form of diversion of the through traffic away from Reading town centre.
- The plan is not designed to achieve any significant public transport improvements.
- Encouraging more cycling and walking could be better and more economically achieved by other measures.
- One-way ring road will be vulnerable to a potential single point of failure, for instance an incident or flooding under the railway bridge.
