We, the undersigned, belonging to the Iranian-Swedish community, have always seen UCLA as one of the best universities in the U.S. Unfortunately, that changed today after witnessing the extreme brutality of the UCLA police against one of the universities' Iranian students, Mostafa Tabatabainejad.
Our greatest concern is that the officers of the UCLA police department tased Mr. Tabatabainejad repeatedly during a short period of time, even after he clearly stated that he could not get up and was hand-cuffed. The acclaimed medical journal, the Lancet, published a study in 2001 showing that a charge of a few seconds with a taser gun can make a person lose control over his body for several minutes.
This means that Mr. Tabatabainejad actually could have been unable to move after the first shock he received, and that the following shocks were nothing more than the use of excessive and brutal violence. The deed committed by the UCLA police is even more severe when considering that 150 people have died due to the use of taser guns since 2001, according to Amnesty International. There must be better ways to solve matters such as this, without clearly endangering students' lives.
The actions of the police in this case bear marks of a remarkable unprofessionalism. We still hope that the life of an Iranian-American enrolled in UCLA, is worth as much as the lives of other American students and that this incident was an isolated occurrence. Yet, it is extremely sad that such a fine university probably will be remembered for such a brutal attack against one of its students.
