Suffering of live food at York Supermarket

Live cannibalism and limb-ejection of crabs was observed in filthy water at the Chi-Yip Supermarket, Rougier Street, York, at 5pm on the 10th November, 2012.
Limb ejection is a reflex crabs perform when they are in pain and distress. One live crab with missing limbs was being cannibalised by another live crab at the front of the tank.
On sunday 11th November 2012 at 1pm the water was dirtier, the crabs were still in the same condition. They were crouching amongst piles of ejected limbs and appeareed to have less strength than the day before. Photos were taken.
Lobsters were huddled at the back of their own tank with their forelimbs tied, unable to eat, and not provided with food. They had been in this situation for at least 20 hours. In spite of evidence of capacity for suffering, there are no controls on how these animals will end their lives once sold.
Scientific research now shows that lobsters and crabs can feel pain and have cognitive processes (ie mental awareness).
We, the people of York, strongly protest against this treatment of live animals and request the City of York Council to investigate the Chi Yip supermarket and intervene, so that these scenes are not present in York. This animal abuse must stop.
