Rabbi Fishel Cohen has been the faithful chaplain of Birmingham University, Aston, BCU, Coventry, Derby, De Montfort, Leicester, Loughborough, Northampton, Solihull, Warwick and Wolverhampton campuses, and has been for more than two decades.
Fishel and his wife Esther have welcomed us - the current undergraduates - and innumerable alumni into their home for Shabbat, for the Chagim, or just to chat if we were feeling low.
Their experience and commitment are beneficial to every Jewish student here; whether Fishel is standing atop a tall ladder lighting the Chanukah candles outside the Guild, or coming round to every student in the first week, and welcoming us to University life - taking the time to invite us to cake evenings by Esther, he shows a loving dedication to all of us.
In particular, there are many reasons why Birmingham is the most popular location today for Jewish students, but one of them is undoubtedly the atmosphere created by the caring hand of Fishel and Esther.
Despite everything that Fishel has done for us, there are elements within the University Jewish Chaplaincy Board that would like to see Fishel replaced, because they feel that he doesnt represent the best interests of us, the students. We are here to state that the opposite is true...
We want to publicly thank Fishel for everything that he has done for the Jewish community here in the Midlands, and we see absolutely no reason to replace him.

It is clear to me that Fishel has played a huge role for me personally during my time in Birmingham, and I'm sure I speak for many others too. He is made for this job, and has proved this over the many years he has been a chaplain here in the Midlands.

Having spent Sukkot in Birmingham 12 years ago, the only party in a Sukka was in the Cohen's backyard, they had a full house and it was a truly inspiring evening. He must stay to continue his vital work.

I have no idea why this petition should even have come to being. Fishel and Esther are an essential integral part of birmingham jewish student community and to even suggest otherwise is completely ridiculous. I sincerely hope that whoever has started the
