While abortion is a safe medical procedure, illegal abortion continues to cause millions of deaths worldwide. The National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League (NARAL) estimates that before 1973, botched illegal abortions caused as many as 5,000 deaths a year in the US. Currently, the Alan Guttmacher Institute estimates that 80,000 women worldwide die annually from complications resulting from illegal abortions. In 11 U.S. states, a ban on abortion in all or most circumstances is likely if Roe is overturned. In 30 states, women are at risk of having their reproductive rights significantly restricted if Roe is overturned.
Womens right to choose hinges on a single vote. The most recent United States Supreme Court case on abortion rights was decided by a razor-thin 5-4 margin. During President Bushs term, 1-2 Supreme Court Justices are likely to retire. With the present court so narrowly split, the appointment of even one more anti-abortion Justice could result in the reversal of Roe v. Wade. Given his track record of nominating reactionary judges to federal courts, Bush is expected to nominate anti-choice Justices to fill Supreme Court vacancies. He has made it clear that he intends to model his Supreme Court appointments after Thomas and Scalia the two most ardent anti-choice votes on the Court.
In such an event, I urge you to use your position of influence to lead a filibuster in the Senate. With your courage and leadership, the voices of your daughters, your sisters and your granddaughters will ring out in Washington: We wont go back!
