RE: Traffic and Safety Improvements in West Homewood
We, the undersigned residents of the City of Homewood, strongly urge the Homewood City Council to implement the following improvements in an effort to increase public safety, address traffic concerns and enhance the overall quality of life for the residents of West Homewood.
1. Vacate (Block) the eastern portion of Oxmoor Road at its intersection with West Oxmoor Road (intersection adjacent to Buffulo Rock and Mayfield's Ice Cream) and construct a cul-de-sac that provides access for only emergency vehicles . This action would improve safety by eliminating dangerous "through traffic" while maintaining the same level of emergency service currently offered by the City.
2. Implement a sidewalk construction program for West Homewood with priority given to main traffic areas including Oxmoor Road, between West Oxmoor Road and Oakmoor Drive, and school areas. Lack of sidewalks is one factor leading to accidents. Sidewalks are an inexpensive means of improving public safety in the community.
3. We recommend that the Homewood Police Department immediately declare Oxmoor Road/Raleigh Avenue a "Target Enforcement Area." This would increase safety and security while items 1 and 2 are under consideration.
