Ali Daei step down from Iranian Team Melli

To Ali Daei,

In 1997 we, the dedicated fans of the Iranian National Team, started and circulated a
petition asking that whatever problems had caused your departure from Team Melli, be
reconciled and the football federation to pave the way for your return to the team,
for the sake of the millions of fans and Iranian football. After a great deal of
media attention of this petition you were reinstated to our beloved Team, which
undoubtedly lead to the momentous World Cup 1998 qualification success and Iran's
joyous WC tournament.

Through this time, you have been a shining star for Iranian football and a guiding
example to our youngsters. You created the bridge for our most talented players to
play and improve their skills in the best leagues in Europe. Through your talent,
skill, and professionalism, you introduced the world to the abilities of Iranian
players and people. You are undoubtedly a pioneer and most accomplished player in
the history of Iranian Football. You have brought joy and pride to a whole nation.

Regretfully though, a time inevitably comes when shining lights fade. We feel that
the time for your participation in Team Melli in the WC has come and passed, the sun
has set. The demanding rigors of not only being competitive at the WC level, but
actually succeeding, is better suited to the youthful talent, of which Iran is
fortunate to be rich in. Team Melli still has two more games with Portugal and Angola
and a real chance to qualify for the next round.

We, lovers and fans of the Iranian Team Melli, respectfully ask you to step down as a
player for these games and let our youthful players graduate to this world stage. Let
us remember you as our beloved hero and champion of our pride, and the strong lion
that you were. Let us applaud and continue to cherish you for being a self-
sacrificing patriot who puts the collective will and happiness of the entire Iranian
nation above all else. Let us not become embittered and have our sweet memories
tarnished by a feeling of betrayal. We have supported you since 1997 and throughout
these years. We need you to support us now.
