More than any other sport football has the power to unite a nationвs people, to give them courage in times of difficulty, and a sense of pride when their country is troubled. However the Islamic Republic of Iran has prohibited women from playing almost every sport, and has outlawed women even watching football matches, thereby denying half of Iranвs population from celebrating both their nation as well as вthe beautiful gameв.
As FIFAвs own web site says: вit is the duty of FIFA and all of our football family to do everything in its power to promote a world of social equality where every woman has an opportunity to enjoy playing football, as the beautiful game is meant for one and all.в
FIFA has the power and authority to turn its statements about womenвs equality into reality, by taking appropriate action with the Iranian government to force them to change their policies about women spectators and participators in football. Despite their poor treatment of women, the government of Iran places a high value on its participation in FIFA tournaments.
We, the undersigned, ask that you encourage the Islamic Regime to live the values of equality that are so dear to FIFA, and to the people of Iran.
