Allowing horseback camping at Cape Point Campground

We are proposing to allow horse persons to experience the beauty of the National Seashore of Cape Hatteras on horseback and camp at the seasonally deserted Cape Point Campground, located in Buxton, NC. For many years the local horse persons of Dare County have been able to experience the pristine Cape Hatteras. It is such an exhilarating ride that it is hard on both people and horses to make the long haul home. Starting on September 6 through May 26 ( when the park is normally closed ) , we propose that the campgrounds would be open to horse camping to generate extra income for the park service and alleviate the hardship on riders who come from afar. Allowing them to do so would permit so many other horse campers from other areas of our state and even neighboring states to experience our enchanting Buxton woods and beaches. Local horse persons must drive hours to go and camp at other national forests such as Uwharrie National Forest, Pisgah National Forest etc. Most horse persons are very self sufficient and require no alterations to the campground. The only necessities that would be required are water and a restroom. Tie lines would be appreciated but not a must, they might also be helpful for your summer guest to use as a clothes line for their wet towels etc. I can see the issue arising of the manure that would be produced as well. I assure you that horse persons would be very responsible with the appropriate disposal in a designated area, which in turn could be used to fertilize plants.
The equestrian community contributes greatly to the economy and the tax base. We help support all kinds of vocations. From farriers, vets, tack shops to feed suppliers, truck and trailer dealers. We pay a lot of road taxes through our purchases of fuel and our weighted tags in pursuit of fulfilling our riding dreams. We are asking for access to areas we help support and maintain through our taxes. We are not asking for special treatment just equal access to our national resources. Thank you for your attention on this matter.
