WHEREAS: A federal grand jury is investigating whether Detroit City Councilman Alonzo "Lonnie" Bates improperly used tax dollars to pay staff members and contractors who did little or no work.
WHEREAS: The grand jury also is probing whether staffers performed political work on city time.
WHEREAS: Bates already has admitted to poor record keeping and filing misleading time sheets.
WHEREAS: Detroit's Auditor General found that one contractor in Bates' office was paid to provide campaign-related services, while six did not provide evidence of work.
We the undersigned call for Alonzo Bates to resign from office and withdraw his candidacy for reelection.
