This petition requests municipal permission for residents of Halifax, Nova Scotia to raise a small number of poultry in their backyards, subject to reasonable controls and regulations.
Poultry raising (particularly egg laying chickens) has been a long standing tradition in almost every part of the world for thousands of years. The practice is an environmentally friendly hobby with no serious negative impacts on neighbourhoods and many benefits and positive results.
Many cities across North America have successfully and reasonably dealt with the matter of urban poultry and the Halifax regional Municipality should adopt one of these well thought out models from another city.
We, the undersigned, hereby petition the Halifax Regional Municipality to amend its bylaws to permit residents to raise poultry on private property.
