Bring the Film "Hooligans" to American Movie Screens

We, the fans of Charlie Hunnam, Elijah Wood, female-directed films, and British football (soccer) appeal to film distributors to give American audiences the opportunity to see the film "Hooligans". Written and directed by Lexi Alexander, "Hooligans" has won audience choice awards at both the SXSW film festival, and at the Malibu International Film Festival.

"Hooligans" is about soccer hooliganism, a culture foreign to US audiences, but the audience experiences that culture through the eyes of an American, Matt Buckner. American audiences are intelligent enough to understand and enjoy this film. There have been other, similar films that did well. "Trainspotting" portrayed a world of heroin addiction foreign to most viewers, and it won acclaim form U. S. audiences and critics alike, despite thick accents.

Given its subject matter, football hooliganism, there are automatic concerns for the violence portrayed in the film. But glorifying violence was not the aim of Ms. Alexander, or her cast.

Scott Weinberg of EfilmCritic.com had this to say:

"One of 'Hooligans' best perspectives comes in relation to the numerous fight scenes. First-time director Lexi Alexander takes great pains to make sure that the brawls are cinematically exciting - while never allowing the mayhem to seem too flashy or appealing. That's a really tough balance to strike, and to the director's credit, you certainly won't walk out of 'Hooligans' trolling the alleys, itchin' for a fight."

Don R. Lewis of FilmThreat.com says:

"But 'Hooligans' never glorifies the violence and in fact by the end of the film, you see how mindless violence really is."

"Hooligans" is about a young man who doubts his own strength, and then finds it was within him all along. With its universal themes of disaffection, camaraderie, brotherhood and consequence it has already seduced film-festival audiences. Please, take a chance; give American filmgoers the opportunity to see this film, and judge for ourselves its merits.
