This is Sheffield Hallam University's recycling policy as quoted from their website http://www.shu.ac.uk/services/facilities/sustainability/recycling.html (14th April 2007)
"Sheffield Hallam University is committed to reducing waste from its activities and increasing the materials that can be recycled. All staff and students are encouraged to recycle in their home or residence where facilities exist."
This recognises that there is a need for recycling within the university, but does absolutely nothing in committing to this need. The University did recycle paper but has recently stopped due to financial cost. It is not good enough to abandon environmentally conscious strategies while waste sent to landfill increases year by year for an economic benefit.
We demand that as a bare minimum paper recycling is resumed at all campuses, and in future the environmental cost is taken into account, not just the financial cost, when making decisions concerning waste management
