Currently, in Canada we have a first-past-the-post government system. This means that the candidate that receives the most votes through an election wins the vote. Canada needs a more representative government, and a proportional representation system needs to be put into place. The trend in government elected representatives has been a white male for much too long. Proportional government can help change that. Proportional government is when according to the percent of votes a candidate gets, thats the percent of seats they get. For example, if Stephen Harper won 42\% of the votes, his government would have 42\% of the seats in the House of Commons. If Jack Layton won 10\% of the votes, his government would get 10\% of the seats in the House of Commons. The system that we have now wastes a lot of citizens votes. With proportional government, your vote is not wasted. Also, the first-past-the-post system doesnt enforce that in order to win majority of the votes, you must have 51\% or more of the votes. A government really isnt voted upon by more than half of the people, and at times, more than half of the population doesnt vote for the winner. Proportional representation will give representation based on what the voters want and what they vote for. Proportional representation will make sure that all minorities are shown and represented in government. Canada needs to make the change from first-past-the-post, to proportional representation; and this change needs to happen NOW.
