Canadian Garden Plot Act

The cultivation of a home is what we all want and need. Yet land is unattainably expensive for most people in Canada. I am asking for the government to give us just one single hectare (2.47 acres) of Crown Land. This land of ours is not a political resource. It is our home. Yet at the present moment we have to work ourselves to our bones to attain what should already be our own.

This Act is similar to the Dominion Lands Act of 1872, where the government proclaimed "Free land!" in order to get settlers from other countries to migrate into Canada. This gave settlers a massive 160 acres of land under their ownership. What I am asking for is much smaller, yet just as meaningful - a small plot of land to be able to settle on and create a home in which I can create a space of beauty and timelessness for myself and my family. Nothing to do with making a big profit or having the biggest house in a neighbourhood, just a place to Live without worry of anything. A place where I don't have to pay enourmous taxes for seemingly no reason, other than "I have to". A place where I can begin to deepen my understanding of who I am, who we are, and where we are, and a place for my children to continue that understanding.

In Russia, the "Private Garden-plot Act" was passed on July 7th 2003 by Vladimir Putin. According to this law, Russian Citizens can receive, free of charge from the state, a plot of land in private inheritable ownership. The plot size vary in region, but are generally 1 to 3 hectares in size - enough to create what one family needs. Any products grown on the land are not subject to taxation. In June 2006 a second law was passes to further facilitate the acquisition of land for gardening.

We Canadians have what we need for this dream to come to fruition. The only thing blocking us are political "boundaries". These boundaries are but paper and loose words. We just need open minds and hearts, and hope for this goodness to come.
