We believe that no agent of Champaign County, Illinois should approve, by action or default, to renew the current contract with Evercom Systems Inc. of Irving, Texas for inmate phone services at the Champaign County Jail. We do not approve of the county receiving revenue due to exorbitant rates being charged to make even local calls from the Champaign County Jail. We especially do not believe the county should receive $14,000 per month in revenues from Evercom, as they have for the last two years under this contract. Rather, Champaign County should only sign a contract with a phone company that charges the lowest possible rates for calls.
We understand that, in many instances, those who are in the county jail are there not because they have been found guilty but rather because they are awaiting trial and are unable to meet bond due to financial circumstances. We believe that the high cost of the phone calls puts an unfair burden on families during a time of crisis, affecting the mental health of both inmates and families.
