Citizen Request for Reconstruction of Joy Road, Occidental., CA
We the undersigned Sonoma County residents, property owners, and/or users do hereby petition the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors to immediately allocate funding for reconstruction of Joy Road.
Joy Road is a main West county transportation artery. No substantive work has been done on this road for more than 30 years and each year its condition worsens. There is a total absence of base rock. Patching potholes does not fix its numerous, serious problems. Instead, the road has become increasingly uneven and dangerous. Swerving to avoid potholes and bumps on a curving, hilly road with oncoming traffic creates serious risks for accidents while also increasing county liability. The road needs reconstruction with a solid base that is crowned and out-sloped for drainage.
Several hundred households on Joy and over 20 dead-end feeder roads are totally dependent on Joy Road for egress. Joy Road is the sole evacuation route in this area and it is depended upon by emergency services. Joy Road additionally serves bicyclists, pedestrians, tourists, art patrons, and increasing number of water trucks, delivery trucks, and school buses. This area serves an ever-increasing property tax and voter base. Reconstruction Joy Road is imperative to ensure citizen safety and to preserve and protect the areas economic vitality.
