Class Size

Growing class sizes in Minnesota public schools are inappropriate. Due to a lack of investment by the state government, class sizes have skyrocketed in recent years. And during the last two legislative sessions, the state legislature mandated hundreds of new academic standards and new testing that all students must master. The State of Minnesota must provide the resources necessary if students and schools are to be successful.

We, the undersigned, respectfully demand that the Minnesota State Legislature and the Governor restore the states commitment to reducing class sizes by providing the necessary funding and resources to allow schools to reduce class sizes. The state legislature must provide the financial resources to meet its constitutional obligation of a thorough, efficient, and adequate education to all of Minnesotas students. Class size must shrink rather than grow each year to targets of no more than 20 students in kindergarten through grade 3, and to no more than 26 students in grades 4 through 12 by 2010, so that students and schools can succeed within the new state guidelines.
