A CN Rail track runs through the southeast corner of Edmonton, Alberta. As Edmonton has expanded the city has allowed developers to build homes in increasing proximity to this track and has not required the developers and CN Rail to provide adequate protection for the families now living near this track.
The CN Rail track is in operation 24 hours a day and passes through the southeast corner of Edmonton from Whitemud Drive to 23 avenue at approximately 10th street. The noise from this train track can be heard as far away as 38th street, and yet when the new community of Tamarack was developed beside the track the City of Edmonton did not ensure enough provisions were present to reduce the noise from this track. These concerns were present for other communities prior to the development of the Tamarack community and continue to be present.
CN Rail reports that they have no plan to discontinue usage of this track.
The immediate concerns regarding this train track are:
A) The train often runs with cars stacked higher than the noise buffer fence (thus defeating the purpose of the fence). These trains are incredibly noisy.
B) Many of the trains are operating very fast through the neighborhood, causing significant shaking of the houses nearest the track
C) The volume and frequency of the safety horn. At night it is used often.
We, the undersigned, respectfully petition the City of Edmonton to work with CN Rail to relocate this track away from residential neighborhoods, and during the interim have the speed limit for the trains dramatically reduced, a controlled crossing installed and mandate height restrictions for trains entering the City of Edmonton.
