Subject: Concerned Citizens demanding passage of the Jan Lokpal Bill
Respected Madam,
I am writing to you as a proud Indian who loves our country. I am sure you are aware of the tremendous groundswell in India and in the Indian Community abroad in support of the India Against Corruption movement led by the great Gandhian Anna Hazare demanding a Bill/Law that would create an independent body that has the powers to investigate and prosecute corrupt individuals and retrieve funds that have been lost as a result of corruption. People across India are rallying to this cause and arranging fasts, gatherings, protests in support of this great cause - "India Against Corruption". This shows the extent of discontent amongst Indians when it comes to corruption at a national level and what we see in our daily lives. If India is to shine in the world stage and compete with developed nations, we have to rid our country of the scourge of corruption.
In response to this democratic movement which is of the people, by the people and for the people, the government has responded by pretending to collaborate with civil society in formulating a bill, but in reality has adopted a treacherous approach to cement corruption into the fabric of our great society.
It has formulated a toothless bill that does not take any civil society demands into account and it actually makes it harder for the common man to raise his/her voice against the corrupt and fight for the truth. The bill actually has clauses that:
1. Provides special protection to the accused by amending the CrPC to make it easier for corrupt individuals to prolong cases against them.
2. Funds the process of filing a case against the person who files a complaint
3. Restricts the Lokpal to 11 individuals without any supporting structure, thereby ensuring that it cannot scale and perform effectively.
4. Provides no whistleblower protection making it hard for the common man to step forward without fearing consequences.
and many more such provisions that actually make it harder for India to break the shackles of corruption.
I have attached the comparison of the bill that the people of India want and the one that the Government wants to foist on us. Is this democracy where the voice of the people is suppressed to favor the corrupt?
I request you to take this matter up with the Prime Minister of India and demand that he instruct the government to serve the people and not itself. If the government version of the bill is passed, I request that you use your power of Pocket Veto to reject this travesty of justice and the principles of democracy.
Thanking You,
A Concerned Citizen who wants to return to a Glorious India where corruption is a thing of the past.
