I am writing you concerning the recent recreational grouper closure.

I am for the closure and feel that the
National Marine Fisheries Service and the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management are doing the right thing. There are thousands of recreational fishers fishing the Gulf of Mexico everyday. It is time that they share in the measures of conservation. Certain recreational fishing groups are quick to point the blame at the commercial longline fishery and also cry foul that the commercial sector gets more of the total allowable catch. Yet they fail to mention that millions of Americans do not have a recreational fishing license nor do many have the means or desire to fish for their own seafood. It is only common sense that the commercial sector would be allowed a larger portion of the catch.
Recently, a recreational fishing access group has distributed a petition to have Congress outlaw longlining gear and shrimp trawls. They site by-catch as their motivation to outlaw these gears. They leave out that both fisheries have made great strides in reducing by-catch and continue to do so. I believe that the attempts of these groups to ban certain commercial gear is in essence an attempt to reallocate a marine resource to their membership.
I ask that you deny the requests of recreational fishing groups to change the grouper closure and also say no to outlawing longline gear and shrimp trawls. By doing so you will ensure that all Americans have access to domestic seafood, not just a select few.
