EIG to Sell the Edmonton Oilers

It is well documented that the EIG heroically purchased the Oilers from Peter Pocklington in the late 90s, fending off a bid from Houston Rockets owner Les Alexander, and in doing so prevented Alexander from relocating the team to Houston.
Since that time, EIG has continually used the small market excuse as a reason to keep payroll low, trade star players away rather than pay them market value, and now, lobby for public money to build a new arena to ensure the long-term viability of the franchise.
Daryl Katz, an Edmonton native and self made billionaire has a strong desire to purchase the team. Katz financial position, with a net worth reported to be C$2.07 billion (Canadian Business magazine, 2007), making him the 486th richest person in the world, clearly would be in a much stronger position to build a consistently competitive team. Having stated publicly that he would consistently spend to the salary cap limit, and invest a significant portion of his own funds in construction of a new arena, Katz has the financial clout to compete with the big boys of the NHL.
The time has come, as popular Oilers blogger Lowetide recently wrote; "The EIG have been paid in full in terms of goodwill re: saving the team, send a message to the EIG that the public feels that selling the team to Katz is whats right for Edmonton, sign this petition and spread the word to everyone you know that cares about the Edmonton Oilers.
