Electoral College-out of date?

This year's election is definitely a close call. The possibility of Bush winning the electoral college, but not the popular vote has many people questioning the electoral college. It makes me wonder if the electoral college isn't out of date. I think America is ready for something new, not necessarily a direct vote, but something needs to replace the electoral college. I plan to send this petition to my state senators after it has been on-line for six months. Thank you for your time.
