Equitable Maternity Leave Benefits for Adoptive Mothers

This discrepancy between the financial support provided to birth and adoptive mothers by the OMA is ill informed. It fails to recognize the primary purpose of the maternity leave which is to provide time for bonding and attachment between the mother and her child. Attachment is well recognized in the scientific literature as being pivotal to the development of all children into healthy adults.
Insofar as our society considers both adoption and birth to be equally legitimate ways to build families, all children deserve to be provided with an equal opportunity for bonding and attachment regardless of how they come to join their families.
We, the undersigned, consider the current policy of the OMA concerning parental leave for adoptive mothers to be arbitrary and discriminatory towards children adopted by Ontario physicians. We request that the OMA provide a total of seventeen weeks of maternity leave benefits to adoptive mothers as is currently available to birth mothers.
