As the college admissions process grows more competitive, stress, sleep deprivation, and overloaded schedules are words and phrases that are becoming commonly associated with high school. Students feel pressured to stack on one challenging course and extracurricular activity after another. This is exacerbated by the new open enrollment policy for AP and Honors courses. There is no doubt that many students will feel overwhelmed and drained by the workload and the all-nighters. Research consistently shows that the combination of stress and sleep deprivation not only weakens academic performance but leads to a multitude of health problems. To combat this problem, we, the undersigned, are advocating the implementation of a rejuvenation session in the Torrance high schools. This 20-30 minute session will be in the middle of the school day and allow students the option to nap, meditate, read, pray, perform yoga, listen to music, or participate in other quiet activities. We are basically asking for an extension to the reading period with the option to do the previously listed activities. This session will dramatically reduce the consequences of students schedules and allow them to recuperate physically and mentally to continue their activities in optimal condition. Not only will academic performance be boosted but so will students attitude and morale.
