Excessive Overdraft Bank Charges

As an average paycheck-to-paycheck worker I like many less wealthy Americans am affected by the harsh overdraft penalties subjected by the banking industry. In this day of electronic banking I cannot see where the cost to a bank for a single overdraft can equal the 30 or more dollars that they charge per incident. These stiff penalties greatly hurt those of us who obviously already have money problems. There also seems to be a practice of entering in transactions from highest to lowest as to maximize the amount of charges. Although I believe that there should be penalties, I think that the government should regulate these practices so that no overdraft charge should be more than equal to the amount of the initial transaction. Also transactions that hit an account at the same time should be entered in from lowest to highest as to minimize the amount of charges. The banking industry should be in the business of protecting its patrons assets especially since we allow them to use our money often without any compensation (the average checking account pays out no interest).
