I am pleased to join a global campaign for the releasing of Mr. Nguyen Dinh Huy who is held in prison for more than a quarter of century in Vietnam.
As many free citizens, I ask for your leadership to call upon the international community, the U.N. Security Council, and the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights to bring justice to Mr. Nguyen Dinh Huy.
Mr. Nguyen Dinh Huy is a patriot, a journalist, an educator, as well as Leader of the Movement to Unite the People and Build Democracy (MUPBD) in Vietnam.
The MUPBD, a non-violent political organization, was formed in 1992 and called for peaceful political changes as well as to bring democracy and free elections for Vietnam.
On the 17th, November 1993, just days before The International Conference for Development in Vietnam supposed to begin on Nov 27th, 1993 with the participation of the Vietnamese government officials and many distinguished scholars around the globe, Mr. Nguyen Dinh Huy was arrested and then in 1995 was sentenced and jailed to 15 years for his peaceful political expressions, which is guaranteed in the Vietnam Constitution.
At the age of 71, he already spent 17 years in detention without charge on previously trial for a total of 27-year political imprisonment in Vietnam.
Mr. Nguyen Dinh Huy has received the prestigious Award of Free Expression from the Human Rights Watch Group, New York in June 1997.
He is Honorary member of English, French, Polish, Perth and Swiss Romand PEN Centres since 2001.
In 2002, Reporters Without Borders had a campaign to call for free Nguyen Dinh Huy who is known as the longest jailed journalist in the world of that year.
Your actions in urging the Vietnamese government to free Mr. Nguyen Dinh Huy are immensely appreciated.
Thank you very much and look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely yours,
