Recently, freenode lost a part of its soul; namely #freenode-social.
Recently, the staff of freenode made a decision to change the entire way this worked; by forming #freenode (for support) and #defocus for general banter; the role #freenode-social had before.
Along with this restructuring, new rules were instated---rules with complete disregard for the general idea of being on IRC: having fun.
The rules explicitly ban several things; from advertising what you're currently playing, to disallowing you from saying "lol", "rofl", "lmao", etc. And when this is not the case, people have been asked to refrain from posting these acronyms in IRC.
#defocus is a dull place; with ops lurking 24/7, telling you what to (and what not to) do, people are scared to take up the discussions we all held so dear, slowly killing the community.
We do not hate freenode---on the contrary, we want freenode to prosper, and remain among the best IRC networks out there. But was this restructuring necessary? No. It definitely wasn't.
We beg you; please, please, please re-instate things like they were. #defocus and #freenode are both welcome to join the freenode-family, but we do not want a community dominated by censorship.
