A critically endangered population of grey whales is under threat from expansion of commercial oil production - you can help save these unique animals.
Depleted by whaling to as few as 100 individuals, the population of grey whales around Sakhalin Island, East Russia, is now under serious threat from dramatic expansion of oil production in the area. Sakhalin Energy Investment Company, a consortium led by Royal Dutch Shell, plans to expand oil production activities in the narrow strip of sea that forms the whales' feeding grounds. The proposed developments could severely disrupt the whales' ability to access and use feeding grounds that are essential to their survival. The whales could also be harmed and even killed by collisions with the increased vessel traffic, or by the loud underwater noises produced during seismic surveying and construction.
