Help save the World Section

The World section is in danger of being permanently removed from the Cord, the student newspaper at Wilfrid Laurier University.

Due to recent leadership changes within management at the Cord, there has been a variety of structural adjustments proposed. One of which pertains to the elimination of the World section. We believe that the removal of the World section will be a detriment to the integrity of the Cord newspaper. Management believes world news is dispensable and that it has failed to contribute anything of consequence to the Laurier community.

The World section affords the opportunity to bring international issues into the student domain. In an increasingly globalized world, international news is just as relevant as local or nation events. One needs to look no further than the recent events in Northern Africa and the Middle East to realize a single isolated incident can transcend borders and have cascading repercussions world wide.

The decision to cut the section was made unilaterally, without the consultation of the readership or the remainder of the Wilfrid Laurier University Student Publication staff.

By signing this petition, you would be contributing to the retention of the World section which has proven to be a vital component of the Cord newspaper. Thank you for your support.
