** Please sign if you would be happy for male's to be involved**
Claire Parker is getting involved in the Chesterfield event later in June but said she was shocked to find out her 7-year-old boy couldn't take part because he was male.
Claire was diagnoised with lymphoma four years ago and has successfully fought it. Since surviving the disease she has taken part in Race for Life every year.
This year she was hoping to enter the event with her 7-year-old son, who has had to watch his mum go through cancer.
When she called to register, officials told her, her son would not be able to take part in the event because he was male.
In a Statement Cancer Research UK told Peak Fm that their
"Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life, which first started in 1994, is a women only fundraising event and has remained so due to its huge popularity and non-competitive atmosphere which encourages women of all ages and fitness levels to take part.
We have a promise and responsibility to our female supporters to ensure our Race for Life events are represented by women only.
However, last year we trialled allowing boys under 11 to enter, yet very few took part when we opened up this opportunity. Furthermore, based on our recent research, women are very keen to keep our events female only, so we have decided to be much clearer on our policy and currently only allow boys under 5 to participate. They can do so free of charge and do not have to be registered. They just need to come along on the day, but must be with a female entrant over the age of 18 years old.
