Many Canadians over the years have asked our provincial and federal governments to create a statutory holiday sometime between New Year's Day and Easter to help us get through the long Canadian winter. The Americans have Martin Luther King Day in the third week of January and President's Day in the middle of February while we wait some years until late April for the arrival of Good Friday. While the argument against the creation of a new holiday is usually economic we believe that we have a great new reason for its creation. On February 28, 2010 Canada won its 14th gold medal at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Not only is this more gold medals than any nation in 90 years of Winter Olympic history but we achieved it by beating the USA in men's hockey! We therefore propose that Prime Minister Harper commemorate this achievement and its effect on our national pride by making February 28 Hockey Day In Canada!
