Justice for James McLintock

We, the undersigned, express our concern for the disappearance and secret detention of British citizen, and charity worker, James McLintock, in Pakistan. We call on the British government to press for his release. We petition the Pakistani government to immediately disclose his whereabouts, his welfare and to cease holding him without charge or trial. He should be allowed all necessary legal and medical access as well as meaningful contact with his family.

BACKGROUND

James McLintock, a Scottish Muslim convert to Islam (otherwise known as Mohammed Yaqub), is suspected to have recently been arrested by Pakistani authorities. Whilst returning home from the North-Western district of Peshawar in late February 2009, he stopped for food at a local restaurant, and his driver returned only to find him missing. The family remain in touch with the British Embassy, who claim to have received unconfirmed reports that he has been detained, though refusing to comment further.

A father to eight children and prolific charity worker who has been resident in the region for a decade, known for his efforts in educating local orphans, McLintock- a man previously detained and released without charge- appears to be the victim of a political tit-for-tat between London and Islamabad, following the bungled arrest and deportation of 11 innocent Pakistani students.
