It has been brought to our attention that the English Department is considering offering a Renaissance Literature course next semester instead of the Shakespeare class taught by Professor Al Vos that is traditionally offered. We understand that Professor Vos would be teaching the literature course, however, we ask you to please reconsider your decision. Shakespeare has been offered in the spring for many years, and Professor Vos has always been the one teach it. There is still a demand for the class, as many students attempted to petition into it last spring and were turned down. The class remains a requirement for most English and Theater Majors, and while we understand that the class will still be offered in the fall, we feel that it will unnecessarily complicate the graduation process for students in those two departments. Additionally, while we realize that your primary concern must be for the department, we ask you to consider the number of students outside the department who are drawn to this class and would be interested in taking it to fulfill Harpur College requirements. Many students will testify to the positive effect that taking this class has had on their academic careers and their lives in general. Not offering this course would upset a long tradition, which many students look forward to, and would be doing a disservice to the student body. In light of the above reasons, we ask you again to please reconsider, and offer the Shakespeare course this coming spring semester rather than Renaissance Literature.
