This is a petition to return the USS Iowa (BB-61)to active status on the Naval Vessel Register and to keep it on the Naval Vessel Register for the forseeable future. The USS Iowa is a higly vauable asset to the U.S. Navy, as it can provide a uniquely high amount of firepower to asisst and cover landing forces while storming beaches or harbors. Yes, in this era of naval aviation and guided missiles, a battleship may not be the be-all, end-all of naval power they once were. However, there are distinct advantages to modernizing and maintaining this ship, one being that the cost of guided missiles is much higher than the cost of the 16 inch shells used on Iowa's main guns. Second, a battleship such as the Iowa would be the only operating battleship in the world, dwarfing the frigates and destroyers used by other navies, and therefore creating an effective psychological weapon and deterrent. Third, the USS Iowa, with modifications, would be not nearly as vulnerable to anti-ship missiles as one might think, as modern technology provides for excellent anti missile systems, and the Iowa's armor, designed for protection against 10 inch and bigger shells, as well as torpedoes, is more than adequate protection against missile strikes. The protection against missiles is greater when in a battle group with Aegis equipped destroyers and cruisers. Fourth, the Iowa is a symbol of american power and strength, and provides a clear message to the enemies of freedom with it's 16 inch gun turrets. Let's keep the Iowa on the high seas, protecting justice.
