Kentucky Deserves Better

Four years into the coaching tenure of head coach Rich Brooks the Wildcats are showing progress on offense. Despite being young and struggling on the offensive line Kentucky is managing to score points. The offensive players and coaches are putting the team in a position to improve their standing in the Southeastern Conference and build a stronger football program.
The defense, however, has shown a consistent decline. Kentucky may very well have the worst defense in the nation. As good as the offense is, the defense is considerably worse. Archrival Louisville annually moves the ball and scores at will against Kentucky. Florida scored 49 first half points in Commonwealth in 2005. LSU scores 49 earlier in 2006 and could have had much more. Louisiana-Monroe, Central Michigan, Ohio and other mediocre football programs have embarrassed Kentucky's defense.
Mike Archer's defenses have been young and some injury-plagued. That is no excuse for the pitiful performance of a unit in the best conference in the nation. There is only so far a footbal program can go with a horrendous defense. Tackling has been abysmal, schemes have been passive and the players seem to be indoctrinated with a defeatist mentality.
We have no faith in Mike Archer. The players and all the fans of the University of Kentucky deserve better, and we can do better.
